Anthony Joshua continues to amplify his desire to face Tyson Fury in his next fight – whenever that is. 

The British superstar drew criticism for declining to call out Fury after his ninth-round demolition of Kubrat Pulev on Dec. 12 at the SSE Arena in London. Since then, Joshua has made the media rounds to clarify his stance, insisting that he has every intention to face the “Gypsy King” immediately in what would be the biggest all-British heavyweight fight in recent memory and an opportunity to settle the “undisputed” label (Joshua own the WBO, IBF, and WBA belts, while Fury owns the WBC belt).

“How close is the Fury fight? I promise you it’s happening,” he wrote in a guest column in the recent issue of Boxing News. “But until you hear it from me, don’t buy into anything. I’m serious about the fight so when I announce it you’ll know it’s real.

“I’m taking my time because there has been a lot of back-and-forth for years. I’ve been chasing this road to ‘undisputed’ and when the time is right I’ll announce it and I’ll have my mind fully focused on the job at hand.”

Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs), who is promoted by Eddie Hearn, seemed to imply that the only way a fight with Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs), who is promoted by Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Frank Warren, could fall apart is if Fury balked at the financial terms. Joshua is on record as saying that he believes the total pot should be split 50-50. 

“When it was Deontay Wilder in my way, that was my focus and he admitted we gave him lucrative offers that he turned down,” Joshua said. “Now it’s Tyson Fury that’s my pure focus. The offers will be made, substantial offers.

“I’ve fought many champions before so it’s obvious to see we’ve done business with world champions before. It’s no different with Fury, he should take this fight with both hands. The money will be split down the middle.”

There are potential complications to this superfight on Joshua’s end as well. As the owner of three of the major heavyweight trinkets, Joshua has been put in a position in which he must satisfy a slew of mandatory challenges. His WBO mandatory is former cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, who has been beating the drums for the past year for a chance to face Joshua.

Joshua hinted that he would be willing to give up certain belts in order to secure a Fury fight in the event that the sanctioning bodies try to enforce their mandatory rulings.

“It would be special if all the belts were on the line but I feel like the cries from the public are just for me to fight Tyson Fury,” Joshua said.

SAN ANTONIO – Canelo Alvarez realizes there are some boxing observers who will never recognize him as the number one fighter, pound-for-pound, in the sport.

The 30-year-old Alvarez legitimized himself as a four-weight world champion last Saturday night, when he dominated England’s Callum Smith in their 12-round, 168-pound championship match at Alamodome. That thorough victory earned Alvarez the WBA “super” and vacant WBC super middleweight titles, and eliminated doubt about whether he could authentically call himself a 168-pound champion.

Mexico’s Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) previously won world titles in the junior middleweight (154 pounds), middleweight (160) and light heavyweight (175) divisions. He won the WBA world super middleweight title from England’s Rocky Fielding two years ago, but Smith (27-1, 19 KOs) was already the WBA’s true 168-pound champ at that time and had stopped Fielding (28-2, 16 KOs) in the first round three years before Alvarez beat him by third-round technical knockout in December 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Before beating the 6-feet-3 Smith so soundly, Alvarez already was considered the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world by many. BoxingScene.com and Ring magazine are among the outlets that list Alvarez at the top of pound-for-pound lists.

Alvarez knows, though, that there remain detractors that consider undefeated three-division champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) the number one boxer in the sport, pound-for-pound. Crawford’s critics insist that his resume since the Omaha, Nebraska, native moved up to the welterweight division 2½ years ago doesn’t warrant top pound-for-pound status.

“There’s always gonna be that group of people that no matter what you do, they’re never gonna care, they’re never gonna like you,” Alvarez said during a post-fight press conference early Sunday morning. “It doesn’t matter how many titles you earn, they’re never gonna care, they’re never gonna like you. But there is that group of people that always stick with you. And that’s who I’m happy to have, and that’s who I’m happy to keep happy.”

Alvarez’s detractors contend that he should’ve lost his first middleweight title fight against Gennadiy Golovkin. That 12-round bout resulted in a suspect split draw in September 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez also tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance, in March 2018. That failed test drew a sixth-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and caused a four-month postponement of his 12-round rematch versus Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs), which Alvarez won by majority decision in September 2018 at T-Mobile Arena.

Those controversies aside, Alvarez hasn’t officially lost since undefeated five-division champion Floyd Mayweather beat him by majority decision in their 12-round junior middleweight title fight in September 2013 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez is 12-0-1 since his loss to Mayweather.

Errol Spence Jr. will have a slew of welterweight options to choose from following his victory over Danny Garcia, and none of the roads directly lead to Terence Crawford.

The WBC and IBF champion Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) is signed under Al Haymon’s PBC banner, where a pool of pugilists like Manny Pacquiao, Yordenis Ugas, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter wait to see which chairs they’ll be able to grab once the music stops.

Spence, one of the sport’s pound-for-pound best, could be the one who ultimately controls the playlist.

“A Porter rematch may be good. The first fight was an exciting fight. The second one would probably be like the first one,” Spence told the “PBC Podcast” hosted by Kenneth Bouhairie and Michael Rosenthal.

What about a fight with Keith Thurman, who’s been calling Spence out profusely of late after never really entertaining the idea when he was an unbeaten champion before losing to Manny Pacquiao?

“I don’t know,” said Spence, before moving on. “I like Ugas, he’s a real fighter. He’s a guy that would fight anybody, and he’s on a winning streak now. I like him as a fighter, and that could be a good fight.”

As for Pacquiao, the 42-year-old Filipino senator and eight-division champion can pick whoever he pleases at this stage of his Hall of Fame-bound career.

“It’s really up to Pacquiao,” said Spence regarding a future fight with Pacquiao.

“Welcome back, Errol Spence Jr. Congratulations on your victory,” Pacquiao wrote on Twitter following Spence’s unanimous decision win over Garcia.

The one opponent Spence, 30, is not overly eager in calling out is Crawford, 32, the much-desired rival who both hardcore and casual fans want to see him square off with.

Considering Crawford’s recent kerfuffle with Top Rank, and that his contract expires with the promotional company in October, Haymon and company could perhaps prefer to keep the waiting game going a little more and call on the Nebraska native once he’s an unrestricted free agent.

“I’m not going to stress out,” said Spence. “I’m going to enjoy my time off, and keep working. When it comes time to get back in there again, I’ll be ahead of schedule.”

Former IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz is training hard with his new coaches, the father & son team of Eddy and Chepo Reynoso.

Ruiz shocked the world in June 2019, when he dropped Anthony Joshua four times for a seventh round stoppage to capture the unified crown at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The rematch took place six months later, in Saudi Arabia, with Ruiz (33-2, 22 KOs) being outboxed over twelve rounds as Joshua reclaimed the heavyweight crown.

Ruiz entered the rematch in poor condition and weighed 283.5-pounds – his highest weight in a decade.

He was 268-pounds in the first meeting, which he took on late notice when Jarrell Miller failed a pre-fight drug test.

After the loss to Joshua, Ruiz parted ways with the trainer who took him to the titles, Manny Robles.

Ruiz admitted that he partied for two months in the aftermath of his career-defining win. He entered training camp late and found himself underprepared in the second outing.

Earlier this year, he hired Eddy Reynoso as his new head trainer. Reynoso is best known for his work with Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, Luis Nery, Oscar Valdez, Frank Sanchez and several others.

According to Ruiz, he’s already shed 20-pounds in training camp.

“I’m working, hard preparing for whoever is next. Thank God we are on the right track . It’s hard. I’ve never done this in my entire life. I never lifted weights, I never had a physical trainer like them. It’s time to run, it’s time to get it back, it’s time to work hard,” Ruiz said.

Ruiz competes under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, which gives him numerous options in 2021 – such as Deontay Wilder, Luis Ortiz, Dominic Breazeale, Charles Martin, Adam Kownacki, Chris Arreola and several others.

Spence, the WBC and WBA welterweight champion, recently retained his titles with a dominant twelve round decision over Danny Garcia.

Crawford, who holds the WBO title at 147, retained his title last month with a knockout of Kell Brook.

Spence has no shortage of potential opponents under the Premier Boxing Champions banner – like Manny Pacquiao, Shawn Porter, Yordenis Ugas, Keith Thurman, Radzhab Butaev, and others.

Crawford is not as fortunate, with Top Rank lacking roster of welterweight contenders. His promotional contract with Top Rank is set to expire in October.

The biggest fight to made at welterweight is Spence vs. Crawford – although the two boxers have very different ideas on what the monetary split should be.

Spence believes he split should be 70-30 or at the very least 60-40. Crawford, however, wants an even 50-50 split down the middle.

Bradley finds it strange that Spence is not openly pushing for Crawford – but called for a fight, two divisions up, with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

“Why would you want to go up [in weight] to face Canelo, but not face Terence Crawford who is in the same weight division as you? This is a money issue for [Spence]. I think Spence is at a point now, and correct me if I’m wrong, where he just wants to get the money and then he wants to leave the game,” said Bradley to ESPN.

“He has no intention of fighting Terence Crawford – even if Terence Crawford changes his promoter and goes to PBC, I don’t think that fight is going to happen. And I hold onto that until they actually sign the fight .”

Last Wednesday night at the Bankwest Stadium, junior middleweight contender Michael Zerafa confronted unbeaten Australian star Tim Tszyu in the aftermath of his first round blowout of Bowyn Morgan.

Zerafa has been out of the ring since last December, when he lost a decision in a dramatic fight with Jeff Horn. The contest was a rematch of their bout which took place just a few months earlier and saw Zerafa knock Horn out.

Tszyu, 26-years-old, is now rolling his eyes after it was recently revealed that Zerafa would face the comebacking Anthony Mundine on a date in March in Bendigo.

“This [fight with Bowyn] was a world title eliminator for me. So there’s only two names on the hit list right now. That’s (Brian) Castano and (Patrick) Teixeira,” Tszyu said.

“I want top five in the world. My manager has a plan for me. At the end of the day, he [Zerafa] just lost to Jeff Horn and he’s fighting Anthony Mundine. So he’s in his own little bubble.”

Mundine, 45-year-old, retired from the sport in December of 2019 after suffering a loss to John Wayne Parr.

“I’ve had a wonderful career.” Mundine said. “I thought I did enough to win but that’s boxing. I’m going to sail into the sunset now.

“I want to thank all the Australian public. Even if they didn’t support me or didn’t like my opinions, I always did my best.”

Zerafa, 28-years-old, is the much fresher fighter with a record of 27-4.

Despite his statements of calling it a day, Mundine reversed his retirement decision earlier this year when he told reporters: “I want to go out a winner and get one last victory.”
