Canelo Backs Joshua To Overcome Fury in The Late Rounds

Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is backing IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua to come away with a victory when he faces WBC world champion Tyson Fury.

There are ongoing discussions to finalize a unification between Joshua and Fury in 2021. The agreement would be a two-fight pact, with the first fight taking place in May or June and the rematch, regardless of the winner, happening before the end of the year.

Canelo believes Joshua would leave with all five titles – after rallying to stop Fury in the late rounds.

“AJ wins by late stoppage. AJ has that raw power which will make Fury think about boxing him more than beating him up. As Joshua gets his second wind in the later rounds, that’s when he’ll land a shot on Fury and knock him out,” Canelo told Sky Sports, according to The Sun.

The fight between Joshua and Fury is dependent on two factors playing out.

Former undisputed cruiserweight king Oleksandr Usyk is the WBO’s mandatory challenger. At the moment he’s refusing to step aside from his ordered title shot. A deal would have to be worked out for Usyk to step aside – or Joshua could be forced to vacate the WBO belt in order to move forward with Fury.

For Fury’s part, he’s involved in a legal rift with Deontay Wilder.

Fury stopped Wilder in seven rounds back in February. Wilder would then exercise an immediate rematch clause. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fight was pushed back several times. Fury and his handlers believe the rematch clause has now expired. Wilder, who believes the rematch clause is still valid, began a legal action to enforce his claim to an immediate third fight.
